According to Zola, a «petit crevé», or a bored-looking dandy, is one of the emblematic personality types of the Second Empire. The paper analyses the meaning of the expression «vivre parisiennement» (to live a Parisian life) at the time of Napoleon III and gives the physical and mental characteristics of a dandy. It also shows androgyny as the ultimate stage of being a fop. In Zola’s eyes, the shamefaced reign of dandies announces the close end of the degenerate society.
