Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon I, who reigned as Napoleon III, the second Emperor of the French and the last monarch of France, has been usually considered as a pale shadow of his great uncle, and a kind of 'black legend' connected with his person remains current in spite of all the remarkable achievements of his reign. The paper analyzes the portrait of the monarch as shown by Emile Zola in three of his novels, parts of the Rougon-Macquart series: The Kill (La Curée), His Excellency Eugène Rougon and The Debacle. Its aim is to show the evolution of Zola's vision of the Emperor within more than two decades of the writer's literary work.
