Despite the constraints of the era, in 1899 Georges Eekhoud published the first French-language literary work to center the homosexual love between two men: “Escal-Vigor”. The unconventional use of religious symbolism and the synthesis of mythological and Christian motifs enable an unconventional portrayal of non-heteronormativity. The article demonstrates how religious symbols can be used to glorify the love between two men. The use of methods from literary studies and anthropology enables an in-depth analysis of saintly figures who contrast with the Roman and Greek myths that underlie many of the novel’s themes. Comparing the protagonists of the novel “Escal-Vigor” with the lives of such figures and with the heroes of Greek and Roman allows us to understand the use of religious syncretism in the queer perspective and to present the image of homosexual love created by Eekhoud.
