Abstract

Paride de Grassi, to whom the article is devoted in its entirety, is among the most distinguished masters of papal ceremonies of the sixteenth century. He was appointed by Julius II as the first ceremonialist of the 16th century. Appointed the first ceremonialist by Julius II, he exerted an enormous influence on both the liturgy of the Catholic Church and papal diplomacy. Like other Renaissance ceremonialists, he left behind numerous works such as diaries, ceremonials, notes and ordines. His notes are a valuable source for historians as well as liturgists, classical philologists and specialists in diplomatic protocol.

The article, which collects and compares information on the Bolognese master, is a starting point for further research into his life and works. It also reveals the relationship between the liturgy of the Catholic Church and diplomatic protocol, with a particular resonance in the life of the papal court - Où tout est cérémonie.
