Abstract

This article presents the role of Saints Peter and Paul in the rites of inauguration of the pontificate of the Roman bishop. The two saints, who were martyred in Rome, became two pillars of the Church. For this reason, they occupy an important place in the papal liturgy, during which the newly elected pope solemnly inaugurates his pontificate. The aim of this article is to highlight the role of these saints in relation to the pontificate of the Bishop of Rome, while noting the significance of individual prayer references to them. The text is divided into three parts. The first part will deal with the general meaning of the cult of saints in the liturgy and popular piety. The second part will present the framework of the rites of the inauguration of the papal pontificate, noting the prayers in which Saints Peter and Paul appear. The third part will analyze the aforementioned texts, which will allow us to see the reason for mentioning these two saints. This will make it possible to see the role played by the Apostles Peter and Paul in the rites of the pontificate of the Roman bishop.
