Connotations o f Proper Names in Intercultural Contacts

Teresa Dobrzyńska

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to show the relations between proper names and the changes of cultural and linguistic values they undergone when transmitted to another language and its name system. Lexical and encyclopedic connotations differentiate the meaning of phrases that have the same references in different languages. The primary function of proper names is to identify objects neither to classify them nor to attribute them specific features. Nevertheless proper names could be a source of rich connotations. Examples of purposely or mistakenly used foreign proper names - when the native names are present in the language - show that the decision to use the name in a chosen language changes the communicative function of the name, which is then perceived as belonging to the particular ethnic culture. These types of connotations are called ethnic or cultural ones.
