Terminological Proposals for the Description of Winged Words
Wojciech Chlebda
Abstract
Winged words, erudite ornaments as well as ordinary building blocks, especially in journalist texts and living colloquial speech, have been collected and edited in Poland for 40 years now. However, their linguistic status has not been discussed in Polish linguistics yet, and winged words, defined as a sort of literary quotations, were placed at the borders of comparative historico-literary investigations rather than within linguistics. The author views the winged words just from the linguistic point of view. In doing so, he takes two perspectives: one is static and system-lexical, the other, dynamic, is pragmatic-textual. In the first of these perspectives the author distinguishes between quotations (as the phenomena belonging to the sphere of parole) and winged words (language units) which derive from these and which belong to the sphere of langue independently of their structure (words, word groups, sentences) and semantic status. Like all elements of language code, winged words should be an object of lexicographic codification. Thus, the author formulates the principles of their philological lexical description. From the second perspective winged words are viewed as a sort of intertextual references, and more precisely - as reminiscences brought about by means of language units and as a potential means of playing intertextual games.
