The History of the Cult of the Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Opole (Mater Admirabilis)

Abstract

In 2025, the Jesuit convent in Opole celebrated the 100th anniversary of its return to Opole. Various discussions revived the history of the cult of the image of Our Lady of Opole, which the monks brought to this Piast stronghold in 1702 as the image of Our Lady of Piekary, leaving a copy made in 1680 by order of Emperor Leopold Habsburg in Piekary. During the jubilee conference, its participants asked for the history of the miraculous painting and its transfer to Opole in 1702 to be recalled once again. The article also describes the many years of efforts to have the painting crowned and the history of the Opole convent until its dissolution, as well as the transfer of the painting to the Church of the Holy Cross and its most recent history, the main moment of which was the solemn coronation performed on 21 June 1983 by St. John Paul II on St. Anne’s Mountain.
