Characteristics of the Selection of Pericopes

Abstract

The article analyzes the selection of Mass readings contained in the Roman Missal published by Pope John XXIII in 1962, which is the latest edition of Pope Pius V’s model missal. The starting point for this article is the question of the abundance of biblical texts in the Mass of the Catechumens. Through an analysis of the biblical passages contained in the Mass forms for the liturgical year, in honor of the saints and for the saints, votive and for the dead, not only the presence of specific, selected passages from the Holy Scriptures is pointed out, but also their theological significance in the context of a given liturgy. The entire publication has been summarized in a static manner so that the difference between the Mass readings in the 1962 Roman Missal and those present in today’s lectionaries can be seen. This also allows us to see the starting point for liturgical reform and why the fathers of the Second Vatican Council asked for a more abundant table of God’s word to be set for the faithful.
