Abstract

Five St John Chrysostom’s homilies on Hannah, the mother of Samuel, in the biblical account of 1 Sm 1-2, have survived. The first three homilies were delivered by the preacher in 387 in Antioch, in his second year of priesthood; the others, perhaps later. An important idea of theirs is that of motherhood, which has already been taken up by modern scholars in some aspects. It’s worth asking about the place of the idea of motherhood in the whole theology contained in the homilies De Anna, which he systematizes and presents in a comprehensive synthesis. It shows that motherhood by faith is the most crucial idea in the homilies. The author tries to capture the characteristic elements of this spiritual way in the homilies: prayer for offspring – offering everything to God – patience in adversity – successful procreation – education as spiritual parenthood. The budding preacher seems to go to the very essence of the vocation of Christian woman in the world.
