Abstract

The Participation of Homosexual Persons in the Liturgical Life of the Church: The Doctrinal Guidelines of Joseph Ratzinger and the New Pastoral Proposals of Pope Francis

The author of the article presents the evolution of pastoral care for homosexual persons in light of the Church's most recent documents, with particular attention to their participation in liturgical life. The doctrinal foundations of pastoral care for homosexual individuals were formulated by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in the 1986 letter of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Homosexualitatis problema. A new shape of this pastoral care is proposed by Pope Francis in the 2023 declaration Fiducia supplicans.

A comparative analysis of these and other documents leads to the conclusion that, although the Church's position on the phenomenon of homosexuality has not changed, a more open pastoral approach towards homosexual individuals has been developed. This approach ensures greater participation in the liturgical life through the introduction of the possibility of blessing homosexual couples within the context of popular piety. The explanation of the form, meaning, and purpose of this blessing helps to better understand Pope Francis' pedagogical intuition, which does not conflict with the teachings of Joseph Ratzinger but rather develops them in the pastoral field.
