Abstract

In 1820, Anglican clergyman James Haldane Stewart (1776-1854) published a small work entitled Hints for a General Union of Christians for Prayer for the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit. The text is a small treatise on prayer, but also an appeal and a detailed instruction concerning internal beliefs and external actions, trying to cover personal and social Christian life: prayer and meetings, sermons and gatherings, reading the Bible and correspondence. It is based on the legacy of the awakening movements and initiatives of the previous century: e.g. the Methodist revival, the American First Great Awakening or the A humble attempt of Jonathan Edwards. Stewarts’Hints are witness of his times: of the social crisis, of the messianic-eschatological awakening and of the missionary enthusiasm. They are also a harbinger of the pneumatological currents of the future times, especially of the Pentecostal movement. Stewart’s work remains an important stage in the history of spiritual ecumenism, based on conversion and prayer which will be fully developed in XX century.
