Abstract

An important aspect of the activity of monasteries of the Canons Regular in medieval Silesia was their charitable work, providing support to the poor and needy. This mission of Christian charity was carried out, among other means, through hospital preceptories. The Żagań (Żagan) convent of Canons Regular of St. Augustine, established in the city in 1284, had been running a hospitium (hospice) in Żagań since the early 14th century, managing it in both material and spiritual matters. The funds for its operations were obtained in various ways, including donations, support received from the abbot, and independent purchases. Source analysis proves that these were well-considered actions, demonstrating planning and deliberate diversification of the sources and types of rents received.
