Abstract

In this article, the author examines the arrangements of the Magnificat canticle of selected Lutheran composers of the 17thand the first half of the 18th century, focusing on the works to the Latin text. In the introductory part, the author briefly presents the history of the development of the Magnificat compositions preceding the period under study. This presentation includes both Catholic and Lutheran composers. In the next step, the Magnificat arrangements of selected Lutheran composers are investigated in the order of the year of birth of individual composers. These include: H. Praetorius, M. Praetorius, H. Schütz, J. Pachelbel, J. Kuhnau, G. Ph. Telemann, Ch. Graupner and C. Ph. E.Bach. In the final conclusions, the author emphasises the connection in the field of musical rhetoric between the examined compositions and Martin Luther's position concerning the Virgin Mary.
