Abstract

In this article, the author continues to examine the arrangements of the Magnificat canticle of selected Lutheran composers of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century, focusing on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In the introductory part, the author outlines the composer's profile against the background of the historical, religious, and cultural conditions of his contemporary times. In the next step, the following Bach compositions are analysed: Magnificat (BWV 243, BWV 243a), the cantata Meine Seel erhebt den Herren (BWV 10) as well as two organ chorales entitled Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (BWV 648 and BWV 733). In the final conclusions, the author emphasises J. S. Bach's use of musical rhetoric in accordance with the tradition set by the Lutheran composers who preceded him, which fully corresponds to Martin Luther's position towards the Virgin Mary.
