Abstract

The Philippines in the religious mosaic of Asia are an exception: they are a country where the majority of its citizens are Catholic. It is a country conquered first by the Spaniards and then by America. Glaring social differences also left a mark on the spirituality of Filipinos. Christology in the Philippines is shaped by the cult of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño), the Suffering Christ “Black Nazarene”, the rites of Holy Week, in which the epic song Pasyon Pilapil is sung, which, according to many theologians, strengthens the attitude of passivity and suffering. On the other hand, theologians practice a specific Filipino trend of liberation theology – “theology of struggle”, referring to biblical premises in the Old Testament and in the Teachings of the Lord Jesus. The balance between these two strands is a great and inspiring challenge for Christology.
